Playwrights & Texts / 作者と作品

This section of the site focuses on playwrights and their texts within Japanese performing arts. The approach to the material organized here is biographical, focusing generally on the context for the creation of pieces and theatres. The sections of the module expand and change with new material, and with it we expect the understanding of each playwright to change as well.

  • Zeami - the foremost theoritician and lyricist of the noh theatre. Wrote many pieces that continue to be performed today. Lived in the late Muromachi period.
  • Ōta Shōgo - a 20th century dramatist who was a central figure in the angura (underground) movement. Playwright of 水の駅 (The Water Station) and other silent pieces in his "theatre of divestitude."
